JOHANNESBURG – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says Sibanye has issued termination letters to over 2,000 mine workers at its Cooke gold operation.
It says miners have already been told not to go underground as operations at the mines will be placed under “care and maintenance”.
The unions Livhuwani Mammburu said: “We suspect that they want to keep mining using contractors, that’s their goals. So, that’s why they’re retrenching such a huge number of people.”
Sibanye has been unavailable for comment.
