CAPE TOWN – The mayor of George and other municipal officials are engaging with protesters in Thembalethu.

Residents from the township took to burning a car, tyres and other debris in Nelson Mandela Boulevard, the road leading into the area.

It’s believed residents, who began protesting early on Wednesday morning, are frustrated because of service delivery issues.

Police, who earlier used stun grenades to disperse the crowd, are on the scene monitoring the situation.

George municipality’s Chantel Edwards-Klose says: “The executive mayor Melvin Naik, deputy mayor Gerrit Pretorius and director for George housing Steven Erasmus are in Thembaluthu to address an illegal protest that started earlier today. Access to Thembalethu is currently still blocked due to the protestors.”
