JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says no occupants will be allowed back into a hijacked building that caught fire in Johannesburg until it has been declared safe.

At least 7 people were killed and several others were hurt when the blaze broke out on the second floor of the Cape York building on the corner of Jeppe and Nugget Streets on Wednesday.

Investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the blaze.

Mashaba says that he’s devastated by the incident.

“Police need to first find the cause of the fire before we can allow anyone to go back into the building.”
