One SA leader, Mmusi Maimane, has highlighted the plight of mineworkers in South Africa, saying August 16 should be declared a national commemorative day. Maimane was addressing this year’s event held in honour of those who died in Marikana eight years ago after a strike for better pay went south.

This despite the promises made by the then mining company Lonmin, which is now Sibanye Stillwater.

Sunday marks eight years since the Marikana massacre, where 34 mineworkers were killed after they were shot by heavily armed police officers. At least 279 others were injured. Union, AMCU, will be leading today’s commemoration event, which will be held in Johannesburg for the first time since the tragedy due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) will be commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Marikana tragedy in Johannesburg on Sunday. It will be the first time that the commemoration will be hosted outside Marikana in the North West, where mineworkers were killed after they were shot by heavily armed police officers.
