Prolific writer and journalist Can Themba’s life was celebrated in Johannesburg on Saturday. A tombstone was also unveiled to honour the literary legend. Themba died in exile in Swaziland in 1968.
“Among us walked giants, literary Titans like Can Themba,” those are the words that were echoed in his honour. Themba’s life was consumed by writing and teaching. He began as an investigative journalist for the famous Drum Magazine. He went on to win The Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for Excellent achievement in literature. “
His best work to date is the short story – “The Suit”. Other notable gems include the “World of Can Themba” and “The Will To Die”.
