JOHANNESBURG – Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane says African National Congress (ANC) members at the policy conference say they would like to see the mining charter increase its black ownership to over 50%.
While the Chamber of Mines has applied to interdict the new Mining Charter, which sets a target of 30%, Zwane says delegates have indicated that they would like to see this figure increase.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the conference at Nasrec.
Zwane says through the policy, the mining industry will have to conform to the ANC’s laws.
“Generally they are because we are implementing the ANC policy nothing else. It’s not my policy, it’s not the department’s view. It’s what ANC wants us to implement, and we are doing it.”
He says not everyone is pleased with the new charter.
“They are not happy about the percentage. They are happy with content, but they are saying with time we must go over 50%. Which over time we will go and relook.”
Zwane says his department will continue to engage with the industry and other stakeholders.
